About

The online BORN data dictionary is a list of BORN data elements, including their definitions and associated pick-list values (where applicable) that are available in the BORN Information System (BIS). Collection of integrated maternal and child data (fertility, prenatal screening, pregnancy, complex pregnancy, birth, NICU/SCN, newborn screening, and screening follow-up) in the BIS began on April 1, 2012. BORN will be able to provide meaningful information for these data elements, as listed in the Data Dictionary, only after the close of the 2012–2013 fiscal year. Please note that trending of this data requires a few years of follow-up, and data elements from the legacy datasets are not always mapped to data elements from the BIS.

Various groups of subject matter experts from across Ontario participated establishing the BORN Data Dictionary, advised on content, relevance and terminology, and recommended inclusion or exclusion of data elements. Justification for collecting each data element was submitted to the Information Privacy Commissioner (IPC) to meet legislative requirement for registry status under PHIPA (2004).
